Let me tell you about my school adventure – I've got this quite annoying pal called dyslexia, which makes reading and math feel like I'm trying to solve puzzles without instructions.
First off, remembering stuff like the alphabet or what order the days come in? Imagine trying to catch fish with your bare hands – they just keep slipping away. That's how these basic facts feel to me; I know I learned them, but when I need them, poof, they're gone.
Math's got its own set of challenges. Trying to crack a math problem feels like I'm a detective solving a mystery, but I'm missing a few clues. And the multiplication table? It should be fundamental, but it doesn’t stick in my mind; I keep forgetting it, as if I'm encountering it for the first time every time.
Watching movies should be fun, right? But when characters start talking fast, it's like I'm listening to a foreign language. I get the words, but my brain's scrambling to put them all together before the next line hits.
Ever got mixed up with right and left? Someone says "turn left," and there's a moment where I have to stop and think, "Okay, which way was that again?"
Reading is its own epic quest. The words seem to move around, rearranging themselves, and focusing on having them stay still uses up all of my energy. Reading turns into this battle of me trying to tame a wild beast that keeps changing its appearance. And while I'm trying hard to arrange the letters and words into the correct order, I lose track of the entire storyline!
In fact, the very act of beginning to read a word or a number can present itself as a riddle wrapped in mystery. At times, my mind whispers to start from the left, while on other occasions, it playfully suggests the right, leaving me confused about which direction to navigate in the letters or numbers that lay before me. Is the number I am reading 23 or 32? Is the word ‘on’ or ‘no’? I am writing a ‘d’ and it transforms into a ‘b’ with a magician's flair, and 'p's and 'q's engage in a dance of disguise. Sometimes I write other letters and numbers as mirror images, too!
Another challenge some of us face is dysgraphia – the difficulty of phrasing sentences together and putting thoughts into words on paper. It makes it very hard to do things like journals, or really anything to do with writing, particularly writing essays or timed writing in an English class.
All these challenges? They make school more like an obstacle course. It means I have to work extra hard, doing things that seem easy for everyone else. But I'm not giving up. I'm always on the lookout for new ways to win in this game of learning. It's not easy, but hey, what adventure is?
