Mathematics is the foundation of education, crucial for developing a child's logical, abstract, and critical thinking abilities. It is a vital skill for success in numerous modern professions. Like sports and music, excelling in math requires dedication, practice, and guidance from an encouraging instructor. Starting early is always beneficial.
Personalized lessons offer a unique opportunity to identify and address knowledge gaps, build a solid mathematical foundation, engage in mathematical games, and foster a love for this fascinating subject. Unlike traditional school classes or independent learning, one-on-one sessions provide tailored support and attention.
Every child desires an engaging learning experience. At Discovery Math, our goal is to make learning captivating and enjoyable. For younger children, we incorporate games to develop math skills, logic, memory, and spatial thinking. For older students, we use creative tasks and challenging problems to achieve the same.
Learning through discovery is transformative. Our aim is to guide children toward their own mathematical discoveries and share in their excitement.
Mathematics is essential for any educational path your child pursues, enhancing their logic, learning skills, and critical thinking. Proficiency in math opens up countless career opportunities and is a significant advantage at the university level. Our personalized lessons provide the perfect environment to fill knowledge gaps, build a strong math background, solve advanced problems, and develop a love for math.
Our mission is to help your child master and enjoy mathematics. Depending on your child’s needs, our main goals may include:
Identifying and addressing knowledge gaps.
Improving performance and grades, preparing for higher education and careers.
Offering enrichment activities for gifted and talented students.
Providing curriculum consulting and recommending optimal textbooks/workbooks for independent study.
Building attention span and study ethics.
For every child, I prepare an individual program, suggest the most appropriate textbooks, and provide assignments to build skills and understanding. I mainly work with the following categories of students:
Advanced-Level Students: Those who seek to explore math beyond the standard curriculum and dive deeper into complex topics.
Students Needing Support: Those who require help with theory, practice, homework, and developing a greater interest in math. This includes students who need assistance with improving their grades in school and homeschoolers needing study and curriculum support.
Students with Special Needs: Including those with dyslexia, dyscalculia, autism spectrum disorders, ADHD, and more. I work extensively with such students, leveraging their strengths and addressing challenges. We focus on increasing attention span, building confidence in math, and using hands-on materials to make the learning process more efficient and enjoyable.
We use a variety of North American and European curricula, along with specialized materials, worksets, and handouts, many of which have been developed over the years. These resources are designed to enhance learning and make math enjoyable. Below are some pictures of the materials and games we use.
When starting with a new student, we begin by testing their knowledge to identify gaps and areas needing improvement. If the goal is to enhance school performance, we work systematically through the curriculum, following a reputable textbook, and covering theory, examples, and problems, with weekly assignments.
For students who excel in school-level math and need more challenge, we use an advanced curriculum that covers more topics in greater depth, fostering deep understanding and skills. For those inclined towards competitive math, we incorporate Olympiad-type problems into their lessons.
Given that the Saskatchewan Math curriculum is below international standards, we aim to prepare every student to meet international grade-level standards and exceed them for gifted/high-achieving individuals.
For younger students, the main goal is to make math interesting, understandable, and enjoyable. We ensure every student excels at their grade level, with no knowledge gaps or missing skills.
Each lesson begins with a game or logical task, followed by theoretical and technical work, and ends with a visual and fascinating activity that leaves the child with a new and exciting discovery.
Weekly homework is given to motivated students and families, though it is not mandatory. Regular individual math work leads to deeper understanding and faster skill development, much like in music and sports.
It is beneficial to start systematically learning math at an early age. We offer 30-minute lessons for children aged 5-8 and 1-hour lessons for older students. To achieve optimal performance and build a solid foundation, we recommend starting lessons no later than Grade 7. However, students of any age will significantly improve their knowledge and skills with at least one term of weekly classes.
Our teaching philosophy is built on these principles:
Engaging one-on-one lessons.
A balance of new material, skill-building, and fun activities.
Use of geometrical and visual approaches to see the "big picture."
Multiple techniques, examples, viewpoints, and tasks for deep understanding and joy in discovery.
Specialized teaching materials, books, handouts, and games.
Exciting math games that make learning enjoyable and effective.
Regular homework assignments as needed.
A lot of parents decide to add IQ development to their child's math classes to enhance problem-solving skills, deepen understanding, and improve academic performance. By combining mathematical education with critical thinking and spatial reasoning exercises, we ensure a well-rounded approach that prepares your child for both school and everyday challenges. This blend fosters intellectual growth and equips students with essential skills for success.
